bloodtide return to the seas

Terms of Service

Effective 2026-05-03 · last updated 2026-05-03

Welcome aboard. By using bloodtide.io you agree to these terms. Bloodtide is a free indie browser game operated as a hobby project by an individual based in the Netherlands. These terms are written in plain language on purpose; where they are unclear, the spirit ("don't be a pirate to other pirates") wins over the letter.

Who can play

The game is open to anyone old enough to use the web in their jurisdiction. We do not knowingly direct the game at users under 16. There is no account creation, no payment, no purchase.

Acceptable use

Use the site as a player, not as a problem. In particular:

  • Do not use offensive, hateful, harassing, or impersonating captain names.
  • Do not modify the game client or send fake leaderboard submissions to inflate your score.
  • Do not attempt to overwhelm the site, scrape it at scale, or otherwise interfere with it.
  • Do not attempt to discover, exploit, or abuse vulnerabilities for any purpose other than reporting them.

We reserve the right to remove leaderboard rows that violate these rules and, in repeated cases, to ban a captain name pattern or an IP from posting future scores. Removal of a row does not create a refund obligation because the game is free.

Leaderboard moderation

The leaderboard is a public log book. We may at our discretion remove entries that:

  • Use a captain name in violation of acceptable use
  • Appear to be the result of cheating (impossible runs, automated submissions)
  • Are subject to a valid GDPR erasure request

Captain names are first-come / first-served. We do not reserve names; if your preferred name is taken by an earlier player, we will not transfer it.

Intellectual property

The game's source code, art, and audio are the property of the author (the indie developer behind bloodtide.io), with copyright reserved as of the year above. Any third-party libraries used by the game are governed by their own licenses, which are visible in the public source repository.

Captain names you choose are yours. By submitting a name to the leaderboard you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to display that name as part of the public leaderboard. You may revoke this license by requesting erasure of your entries (see the Privacy Policy).

No warranty, no liability

Bloodtide is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind. The game runs on your computer and inside your browser, on the public internet, on third-party infrastructure. Any of those layers can fail. We do our best to keep the site up but do not promise uptime, persistence of leaderboard rows beyond the site's lifetime, or that any specific feature will continue to work in the future.

To the extent permitted by law, the author is not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the site, including but not limited to lost saves, lost leaderboard rows, lost time, or lost runs. Because the game is free and an indie hobby project, this disclaimer is broad on purpose.

Termination

We may, at any time, take the site offline, retire features, reset the leaderboard, or stop hosting Bloodtide entirely. There is no account to terminate; you can stop playing at any time and no data leaves your browser unless you submit a score.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Netherlands. Disputes that cannot be resolved informally will be subject to the jurisdiction of the competent court in the Netherlands. EU consumer protections, where applicable, are not affected by this choice of law. EU residents may also access dispute-resolution procedures via the European ODR platform.

Changes to these terms

Material changes will be reflected in the "last updated" date and in the changelog below. Continued use of the site after a change constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
